Susan Jo Milne Hope
Colored Pencil and Glass Artist
Born in New Jersey on February 15, 1955, Susan Hope grew up with a drawing utensil of some sort in her hand almost all the time. She completed two years of undergraduate work at Moravian college in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania before transferring with her husband to the University of Tennessee in Knoxville graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1977. She was hired by the Entomology Department at U.T. where she began to do scientific illustrations which were used in taxonomic keys for publications of newly described insects as well as entomology texts.
As an illustrator, Susan completed many commissioned drawings and watercolors of historical buildings, bridges and homes. Color and the beauty of nature led her through many different mediums over the ensuing years. She has spent over twenty-five years producing stained glass pieces for homes and churches. In recent years, she became enamored with kiln formed glass. Her artworks in glass are now exhibited and sold in local shops and galleries. In all her artistic endeavors her work seems to come back to her passionate love of drawing and the detailed study of color. When Susan discovered the UNCG program in Botanical Illustration it was like coming home.
